Maria Moore #432, Milford, Michigan
In 1833 James Moore came to Milford at the age of seven. The family settled on a farm that his father located from the government. In 1861 he married Maria Everitt of Lyon Township who was described in the County History as a lady whose attainments eminently qualify her to preside over their beautiful home. Her taste for flowers was lavishly displayed in the beautiful conservatory attached to the house and in the well-kept beds of the garden. Martha Maria Everitt (Maria) was born on December 22, 1840. She and James had three children. In 1876 the family moved to the farm in Milford where Mr. Moore developed the greatest horse and stock farm in this part of the country.
James died in 1877, the result of being thrown from a road cart; and Maria continued to run the family farm with a firm hand and a mind that was clear and bright until the end. An accomplished woman in many areas, her greatest pride was her lavish garden of rare and beautiful flowers, some of which she developed herself. Until her last days she spent many hours among her plants, passing away on September 5, 1926. Since one of our charter members lived in and restored the Moore farmhouse, Maria Moore seemed a fitting name for our Chapter. The Maria Moore Chapter #432 was chartered on March 3, 1970.
